Puff ball mushrooms spread their spores when the wind blows across the opening or animals brush up against them. This happens when they dry out. Back in the fall, this mushroom would have been white and firm to the touch. In that stage, they are edible after cooking if, when you cut them open, they are fully white and fleshy inside. Bonus fact: puff ball mushrooms used to be in the taxonomic group Lycoperdon, translating to "wolf farts." 🍄 #bereapinnacles #hikeky #hikeberea #mushrooms #nature |

One of the most magical mushroom experiences for a child is puffing the spores out of old puffballs! It’s fun, educational, and provides a bit of entertainment when out in the woods. It’s also beneficial to the mushrooms as you’re helping to spread their spores! 🍄🟫✨ In some countries these puffballs are called Wolf Farts, which is such a great descriptor! 🐺💨 ⚠️ There have been a few rare cases where young people were directly inhaling (i.e. snorting) the spores thinking they would become in

Found one of my bucketlist mushrooms in North Carolina, the Stalked Puffball in Aspic (Calostoma cinnabarinum). These are gasteroid mushrooms (meaning the spores are on the inside) that grow in mycorrhizal association with Oaks. They are related to Earthballs (Scleroderma), and thus distantly related to Bolete-type mushrooms (Boletales). They are truly weird little mushrooms coated with a thick layer of gooey jelly that helps them mature even when conditions dry out. There are recorded examples

Arthur 🧒🏼 talks about a very fun family of mushrooms called Puffballs 🍄💨 These round, egg-like fungi are rather common and when mature, they “puff” their spores out of the top, much to Arthur’s delight! All species of puffballs in the UK are edible when young and pure white inside, looking like a ball of mozzarella cheese. If they are any other colour inside (commonly green, purple or black) or they look like a developing mushroom when you cut them open, then they are not for eating! If you

My earliest memories of #mushrooms were #puffballs when I was about 5 years of age. After the summer rains in northern #Ohio, puffballs would come up in #abundance. I remember – gleefully – stomping upon them to see explosions of brown #spores sent skyward. My twin brother – North – and I would compete for them. We soon discovered that we could throw them at one another whereupon they would explode upon impact with a brown puff! One day our mother, upon seeing us pelt each other, came out of the

Have you seen puffballs go PUFF?! These beloved round fungi are solid when young, but as they mature, they turn into a spore-filled chamber that puffs out clouds of spores. This clever dispersal mechanism helps ensure the spores travel far when they get knocked by raindrops! One common species, which is featured in this video, is the pear-shaped puffball (Lycoperdon pyriforme), named for its tiny pear-like shape. It often grows in clusters on decaying wood, aiding nutrient recycling in ecosystem
